“Becs had no chance of beating Matt” says her dad

December 20, 2010

The dad of X Factor runner-up Rebecca Ferguson has said she had no chance of beating winner Matt Cardle.

Father Don Ferguson, 52, has remained a peripheral figure throughout the soul star’s stint in the competition, but said he firmly believed the final would be between the painter and decorator and teen pop group One Direction.

Mr Ferguson, a waste disposal expert from Liverpool, could only watch from the audience as ‘Becky’ was told she had lost out to heartthrob Matt.

He said: “I didn’t think Rebecca would get down to the final two so was surprised to see One Direction bowing out.

“Matt has been the favourite right from the start and I don’t think anyone was going to beat him in all honesty – not even Rebecca. It was a dead-rubber.”

And the proud Liverpool dad said Rebecca was “philosophical” in defeat when he spoke to her after the show.

He continued: “Rebecca was very philosophical after the show and sees everything as a beginning rather than the end.

“Rebecca has done so well and I’m so proud of her.

“This is just the beginning for her now.

“She wasn’t downhearted at all because she knows there are no winners or losers at this stage.”

Mr Ferguson added that he was relieved to see Rebecca’s days of begging record labels to listen to her demos have finally paid off.

He said: “Rebecca has come a long long way in the last year.

“I can’t even count how many demo tapes she has tried to make but now after 12 months of it all, she has the perfect platform.

“She is really excited about the future but she has to keep the focus.”
