Zutons singer found guilty of assault
Zutons’ frontman Dave McCabe who headbutted a student after he insulted his girlfriend, has been found guilty of assault.
The 29-year-old broke Peter Appleby’s nose during a row outside Korova nightclub in the city centre, Liverpool Crown Court heard.
McCabe, who wrote the hit song Valerie which was covered by Amy Winehouse and Mark Ronson, was convicted by the jury in just three hours.
The lead singer, who hails from Woolton, has always claimed he was acting in self-defence after a group of men mocked his girlfriend, claiming her fur coat made her look like she had a beard.
He insists the pair were surrounded by the students and feared he was going to be attacked.
But his version of events was rejected by the jury who found the Liverpool frontman guilty of assault occasioning actual bodily harm during the three-day trial.
McCabe was released on bail and will be sentenced on 29 October.
